Long weekends are a cause for celebration — it’s the perfect time to enjoy quality time together as a family. Whether you enjoy the cold or prefer to hunker down indoors, finding a fun family activity can be challenging with different preferences.

1. Trivia Night

Flex your knowledge and gather your family for a night of trivia. You can set up your own game or find an online game to keep everyone on their toes.

For trivia nights, we love Kahoot. has crowdsourced trivia games on pretty much every topic. So whether your family is into movies, music, or food, you can easily pick a pre-made trivia game. Also, Kahoot allows family members to play virtually from their smartphone, and it makes it a seamless process.

2. Cook And Share A Meal With Loved Ones

Staying indoors to share a meal is a great way to spend a few hours away from the cold. Whether you’re buying takeout or cooking up a family meal, you can’t go wrong with quality time spent with loved ones.

My cousin and our family like to plan a ‘Second Thanksgiving’, where we all get together and enjoy a meal together in the middle of the cold winter. We laugh, eat good food and enjoy each other’s company!

3. Go Skating

Getting through the winter blues helps if you can find outdoor activities to enjoy! Whether it’s skating, skiing or going on a winter walk, spending time outdoors with loved ones can help change up the scenery if you're feeling a little stir-crazy at home. End with a cozy cup of hot chocolate!

There are a few rinks near where I live, so it’s a very accessible activity to do for a few hours! And if you have your own pair of skates, it’s even better since it’s a free activity!‍

4. Join A Community Event

Your local community centre might have a few family-related activities for you and your kiddos.

My family and I will be attending a community-run Family Fun Soccer Day event for the kids. It’s a great way to spend an afternoon with family and new friends!

5. Host A Great Family Baking Challenge

Baking — with a twist! Pick a baking category (ie. bread, cupcakes, cookies) and let everyone make it their own. While there may be a winner, there’s no losing when tasty treats are involved.‍

There are so many ways to make baking fun and competitive. You can basically make your own rules. If you’re baking with your immediate family, make sure to leave time for a taste test! If you’re doing this virtually, try something you can judge visually like cookie decorating!

6. Have A Board Game Night

Game nights are a winter stay-at-home classic. To keep it interesting, try a game you’ve never played or pick something you can play virtually!‍

My family and I play board games or cards whenever we have long periods of family time. We have a lot of fun playing it as a family although we are all very competitive. Try a digital game like !

Pancakes, coffee and good company sound like the perfect weekend morning. Not into brunch? Invite your friends and family out to try a new restaurant or cuisine to change up your weekend.

My friends and I love to try new restaurants around Toronto! It’s a great way to spend quality time together while enjoying delicious food. Brunch also helps switch up our usual dinner routine!
